Any glass contains inclusions of nickel sulphide (NiS) that increase their volume under high temperatures. The increse in volume of NiS inclusions can cause the sheet of glass to break spontaneously once it has been installed. According to the type of application in which the glass is to be used, the heat soak treatment may be used to reduce the risk of human injury. Thus, after the tempering process, the glass is held under a constant temperature of cca. 290 degrees C, for a period of time (4-8 hours). During this time, the increase volume of NiS inclusions causes the breaking of the tempered glass that may have this risk.
